Design for Carnaval
Carnaval is one of the most important events in the city of Coyolillo, located in Veracruz. This celebration illustrates that the city is in many ways more connected to African and Caribbean culture than that of inland Mexico. In the spirit of Carnaval, design a costume for this festive event. Karla Williams guides the workshop. Ages 7 to adult. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The Sugar's at the Bottom of the Cup
Elda Del Bino Willitts was seven years old when her family traveled from Genoa to New York. Crossed the United States by train to settle in San Francisco in the age of gas street lights and cattle pastures in Cow Hollow. For journalist Patricia Lynn Henley, one of the pleasures of co-writing Elda's memoir, The Sugar's at the Bottom of the Cup, was exploring Elda's detailed memories of her San Francisco childhood. In this presentation Patricia will discuss how she approached weaving those varied recollections into an entrancing tale, and what she learned along the way.

Ross, California: the People, the Places, the History
The Moya/RHS Authors Committee will host the public release of this new book to commemorate the centennial of the incorporation of the Town of Ross. Books will be available for purchase and signing. This event will be held in the MAGC Garden Room.The program begins at 11:00 a.m., and last for about one hour. Old Woodside Store Day
The San Mateo County Historical Association presents this annual family event that focuses on the history of the 1854 Woodside Store and the logging activities once prevalent in the area. Activities include a horse drawn wagon ride, sawing with a two-man saw, making shingles with a mallet and a froe, rope making, butter churning, pie eating and seed spitting contests, creating rag dolls, washing clothes the old fashioned way, and other activities of the 19th century. Be Part of History: Legacy Oral History Program, Museum of Performance & Design
This stimulating and informative three-day workshop will provide the training necessary for participants to launch their own oral history projects. While drawing on references and examples in the performing arts, the workshop will be equally appropriate for those involved in anthropology, institutional history, social history, family history, personal history, master’s or doctoral studies, or other projects.

The 13th annual oral history workshop will be carefully designed to match the experience levels of all participants— beginning, intermediate, or advanced. The lecture/discussion format will also include opportunities to apply the material presented.  The workshop will cover:

  • Project Design
  • Legal/Ethical Issues
  • Technology
  • Interviewing
  • Transcription
  • Editing
  • Creating a research quality document

Fee:  $300, before May 1st;   $350 after May 1st.

Fee includes syllabus/guidebook containing all the material taught in the workshop, special readings, and other vital information. In order to give personal attention to each participant and project, the workshop is strictly limited to 22 participants.  Pre-registration required. Two partial scholarships (half tuition) are available. Apply by May 1.
