CHS provides reproductions of our images for a fee. Persons seeking images for reproduction are encouraged to come to the library to view the collection and select specific images.

Guidelines for Obtaining Images

Images that have FN #
(File Negative Number) or TN # (Transparency Number)
An FN # or TN # generally appears on the original item, or on the credit line or label of the reproduction.  If you have the FN # or TN # of an image, you can send in a completed Reproduction Request Form.

Images without FN # or TN #
If you have seen the requested image(s) in a publication but its description does not include an FN # or TN #, you can fax, e-mail or mail us a copy of the reproduction and library staff will conduct image research for up to 20 minutes per request. Please supply as much information about the image as possible, to aid library staff in locating the original.

General Images
Requests for general images (e.g., “Do you have a good picture of downtown San Francisco in the 1800s?”) require in-person photo research. For information on accessing the photography collection please consult  Doing Research.

Image Research for Hire
On request, library staff can provide a list of local researchers for hire.

Placing the Order
All Reproduction Order Forms must be submitted in writing and can be sent by fax, email, or mail.  Prepayment on all orders is required.
