The photographs in this on-line gallery are from the collections of the Jack London State Park, California State Parks, and were taken in April and May, 1906 by Jack and Charmian London. The California Historical Society borrowed the original 1906 negatives from the Jack London collections, which were enlarged from the original 5-1/2 inch by 3-1/4 inch image sized negatives. The prints were then scanned for web presentation. Inspection of the 1906 negatives revealed that the lens in the Londons’ camera was much better than those in popular box or "pin hole" roll film cameras of the era, and was likely a top of the line camera with a very fine lens, and shutter and aperature controls. The Jack London collection photographs were printed by California Historical Society photographer Philip Adam using an enlarger with a cold light head, a type of light source advocated by Ansel Adams. The photographs are of scenes throughout San Francisco, Santa Rosa, and northern California. While not yet specifically identified, these photographs by Jack and Charmian London are a telling legacy of the 1906 California earthquake and the firestorms in San Francisco. © 2006 California Historical Society.
