The California Historical Society is currently seeking candidates for a 1½ to 2 year term position as Project Archivist, for Teaching California, a collaborative grant project funded by the State of California. Teaching California will offer California K-12 teachers and their students an innovative online collection of teaching resources.

Under the guidance of the CHS Archivist/Digital Archivist, the Project Archivist will process, describe, and coordinate the imaging of archival collections in a variety of formats. The Project Archivist will also be responsible for carrying out rehousing, accessioning, processing and description work on collections selected for inclusion in Teaching California; and will collaborate with colleagues to establish intellectual control over the CHS Collection.

The California Historical Society (CHS) is seeking candidates for the position of Director of Library and Collections. This is a San Francisco-based, full-time exempt position with benefits, including fully paid employee health, vision, dental, life, and AD&D, and a generous holiday and time off policy. The Director is a key leader in the organization, providing guidance and vision for the North Baker Research Library and CHS Collection. Overseeing all programs and activities of the department, the Director is responsible for: staff management; budgeting; collection development and management; processing and cataloging; reference services and public outreach; and digital projects. In collaboration with the Executive Director & CEO, other department heads and staff, the Director will:

  • Develop projects and partnerships to inspire broad public engagement with and increased access to the CHS Collection
  • Pursue new collection development opportunities; and
  • Engage in fundraising, grant-seeking, and donor cultivation initiatives.

As a key member of the executive team, the Director will participate in formulating strategic direction and ensuring operational alignment of the organization. The California Historical Society is currently seeking applicants for the new position of Assistant Curator of Exhibitions and Programs. Based in Los Angeles and reporting to the Director of Exhibitions, the Assistant Curator will help design, create, execute, and support a program of exhibitions and public history programming that inspires and empowers people to make California's richly diverse past a meaningful part of their contemporary lives. Exhibitions and programs take place in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and, increasingly, across the State. This is a full-time, non-exempt position with benefits, including fully paid employee health, vision, dental, life, and AD&D, a generous holiday and time off policy, and a team full of interesting and warm people to work with. The position is based in Los Angeles and incumbent must be able to frequently travel throughout the greater Los Angeles area for logistics, errands, venue set up, etc.; position also involves some overnight travel, evenings and weekend work. The California Historical Society is currently seeking applicants for the position of Library Assistant for its North Baker Research Library. The position of Library Assistant is part-time (20 hours a week), hourly, non-exempt, and reports to and works under the Reference and Outreach Librarian, and in coordination with colleagues across the collections team. The Library Assistant performs a variety of customer service and library duties in a special collections library setting; is responsible for monitoring the reading room during public hours; provides policy information to library patrons; assists patrons in their search for archival and library material; answers reference questions in person and by email and phone under the guidance of the Reference Librarian; and pages and re-shelves materials. Incumbent must be able to work Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 12:30 to 5: 30 p.m. May include some weekend and evening hours as required. DOCENT/GALLERY GUIDE VOLUNTEERS

The California Historical Society seeks volunteer docents to support its current exhibitions on an ongoing basis. Help us share California stories with gallery visitors, adult tour groups, school children, and others.

The California Historical Society engages a wide audience and we depend upon the generous assistance of volunteers to ensure the smooth running of the educational programs and public events we offer to members, historians, neighbors, and the general public.

The California Historical Society does not currently have a regular internship program. Individuals interested in pursuing possible internship opportunities with the California Historical Society may contact info@calhist.org and should please include the following:

  • A cover letter explaining your area(s) of study; your availability; the specific educational goal(s) you wish to achieve; and the requirements for your sponsoring institution (if any).
